Wasted Space Transformed into Japanese Garden

Unused space between a pool and garage was transformed into a secret Japanese inspired garden. Three shady lady black olive trees (Bucida buceras ‘Shady Lady’) frame the backdrop and add privacy along with temporary reed fencing which screens a chain link fence until wild coffee matures to take its place. A bamboo fence was used to screen pool pumps, hose, and garden equipment. Other plants used to create an Asian feel are leatherleaf mahonia (Mahonia bealei), walking iris (Neomerica gracilis), flowering maple (Abutilon sp.), dwarf podocarpus (Podocarpus macrocarpa ‘Pringelii’). Since the soil was poor, recycled mulch from the city of St. Petersburg was used because it breaks down quickly and amends the soil. Pine needles were used for the paths.
